(01)Scope

What we build

The pool deck is where people spend the most time outside. It has to handle bare feet, splashing, and full sun, and it is usually the frame for the best view on the property.

New pool decks

Pavers around a new or existing pool, laid out to fit the shape of the water and the way people move between the house, the pool, and the yard.

Deck replacements

Replacing a worn, stained, or cracked deck surface with pavers.

Deck expansions

More room for lounge chairs, dining, or a path out to the yard or the water. An expansion can also connect the deck to a patio or a walkway into the yard.

Planting around the deck

Palms, beds, and borders that soften the edges and frame the view, built by the same crew. Where privacy matters, see privacy planting.

(03)Materials

Materials

Common choices for pool decks. The right one depends on the pool, the house, and the budget.

  • 01

    Natural stone

Stone such as travertine, a popular pool-deck choice in light, warm tones.

  • 02

    Concrete pavers

Many colors and textures, including lighter shades suited to full sun.

  • 03

    Coping & borders

Edge pieces and borders that finish the pool edge and frame the deck.

  • 04

    Rock & planting borders

River rock, beds, and palms that soften the edge between deck and yard.

(04)Before the visit

Worth thinking about before the visit

A pool deck is used every day in a Florida summer, so small decisions add up. A few to have in mind when Craig comes out:

  • Where the chairs go. How many loungers, where the afternoon sun lands, and where you want shade.
  • Color and heat. Lighter tones are generally easier on bare feet than dark ones.
  • The view. What you want to look at from the water, and what you would rather screen.
  • Planting near the water. Plants that drop fewer leaves and flowers mean less to skim out of the pool.
  • Routes in and out. From the house, to the yard, and to the dock or the water if there is one.
(05)Questions

Pool deck questions

Straight answers. The specifics for your pool come from the on-site look.

01Will pavers get hot around the pool?

Any surface in full Florida sun warms up. Lighter-colored pavers and natural stone are generally more comfortable underfoot than dark surfaces, so color is one of the first things to talk through for a pool deck.

02Are paver pool decks slippery when wet?

Any wet surface can be slippery. Textured pavers and stone give better footing than smooth slabs, and the finish of the paver is something to look at closely when choosing materials for the deck.

03Can you replace my deck without redoing the pool?

Deck replacements are one of the pool deck jobs we take on. How the new deck meets the pool edge and coping depends on the pool itself, so that is looked at closely during the on-site visit.

04Can the deck be made bigger?

Yes. Expansions add room for chairs or dining, or a path out to the yard or the water. Grade, drainage, and how the new area ties into the existing deck are part of the on-site look.

05How does water drain off a pool deck?

A deck should shed water away from the pool and the house. Where that water goes next depends on the yard, so drainage away from the pool is checked at the on-site visit before the layout is set.

06What can be planted close to the pool?

Palms, beds, and river-rock borders are common ways to soften the deck edge. Plants close to the water are best chosen for less leaf and flower drop, and with roots that will not push against the deck. Specific plants are picked for the site. See privacy planting for screening ideas.
